Tour 2010: Vinokourov Wins Stage Ahead of Battle in Pyrenees

A day after coming oh-so-close to victory, Alexander Vinokourov (KAZ) got it right in Saturday’s 13th stage at the Tour de France. After finishing third up Mende on Friday, Vinokourov attacked over a short but steep third-category climb with 7.5km to go in the 196km run from Rodez to Revel to hold off the sprinters. “It’s a dream to win a stage at the Tour. I was close to victory yesterday and I wanted to try again today because I will be helping Alberto (Contador) in the Pyrénées,” Vinokourov said. “The legs were fresh and I was able to get over the climb with a nice gap. I knew the sprinters were coming in behind me, so I really pushed the pedals. I am very happy.” Alessandro Petacchi (ITA) finished third in the stage to reclaim the green points jersey. “Every point is important right now. It’s going to be a big battle all the way to Paris,” Petacchi said. “It was a hard stage but my team did a great job to keep me in position over the climb and placed me perfectly for the sprint. I knew if I could finish ahead of Thor (Hushovd) I could reclaim the jersey. I know the Pyrénées will be hard, but I believe I can get over them.” The 2010 Tour switches gears Sunday with the first of four grueling climbing stages across the Pyrénées that will decide who win the 97th Tour. Andy Schleck (LUX) finished safely in the front group to retain his 31-second lead to two-time Tour winner Alberto Contador (SPA). Contador says the key to the Pyrénées is to not have a bad day and keep his options alive going into the final time trial at Bordeaux. “As I said from the beginning, the Pyrénées will decide everything,” Contador said. “I hope to have good sensations, because every day I am feeling better. I hope to take advantage of these hard stages to take back time, and if it’s possible, to move ahead of Schleck.” Schleck was happy to cross the line with the yellow jersey on his back going into the Pyrénées. “It was a good stage for the team. I was feeling a little tired from the stage of yesterday, but they did a great job to protect me. I felt better as the stage unfolded and I got over the final climb without any problems,” Schleck said. “It will be a big battle between Alberto and I. I have the yellow jersey, so that gives me an advantage. He has to take it away from me and I am going to fight.”
